@Ancient Capital of Nepal |Date 800 BC - 300 AD|
KIRAT DYNASTY - (800 BC - 300 AD) Nepal's recorded history began with the Kiratis who ruled for about 1225 years .It was during this period that Siddhartha Gautama, founder of Buddhism was born. Early Kirat settlements emerged around mother goddesses and Bhairav temples. This probably were also Kirat defenses on hilltops such as Phulchoki, Nagarjun, Champa Devi, Nagarkot gap, Nuwakot etc.. The Kirat towns on hilltops were referred to as pringgas eg. Pharping, Khopring (Bhaktapur) and dula suffix meant settlements on slopes: Kupondol (Newari term dol for dula). The Kirata capital appears to have shifted frequently, most likely reason for defense. It is now known that Kiratis shifted their capital few times. Here we look into some of the earliest known capital of Nepal when Nepali civilization was taking a shape. Let's see what this places have become today.
