This is a cultural video slide of Sunuwar people during the Sakela harvest festival in Nepal. The song is in Sunuwar language and the title of this song is Reuhita Raagimsumsha which means Falling Rain. Sunuwar language belongs to the Kiranti language spoken in Eastern hills of Dolakha District and Ramechhap District, Janakpur Zone, Northwestern Okhaldhunga District, Sagarmatha Zone The Sunuwar people belong to the Kirati family or the Kirat confederation that includes the Dhimal, the Limbu, the Rai, the Jirel, the Thami, the Surel, the Yakkha and many other Mongoloid ethnic groups of Nepal speaking Tibetan-Burmese Kiranti language. Sunuwar’s original name is Koinch. Names like Mukhiya or Mukhia was given to Sunuwar by the Gorkha King P.N Shah. Sunuwar have their distinct language, religion, culture and social customs. They speaks their own mother language “Koinch Lo”. They inhabit the eastern hills of Nepal like the Eastern hills of Dolakha District and Ramechhap District, Janakpur Zone, Northwestern Okhaldhunga District, Sagarmatha Zone. Before modern-day Nepal was established, this region was known as Wallo Kirat. Sunuwar is very rich culture and traditions. They have hundreds of traditional feasts and festivals which are difficult to explain in detail. Every traditional feast and festival has its own objectives, characteristics, and system of celebration. Some greatest traditional festivals such as Chandi Dance in (Baisakh Purnima), Sakela (Shyadar-Pidar), Gil puja (Gil-Pidar), Meserani puja (Meserani-Pidar) etc. are important among the others. They celebrate Shyadar-pidar festival on the Day of Buddha Purnima or after 5 days of Buddha Purnima(Panchami) according to the Nepali calendar. Sunuwar New year is celebrated on the day of Basanta Panchami. As a community, they celebrate Meserani Pidar twice a year, with no specific date allocated as such.
