Brrrr - Groundhog Phil predicts six more weeks of winter Pennsylvania's most famous weather prognosticating groundhog 'Punxsutawney Phil,' saw his shadow on Tuesday (February 2), a clear indication of six more weeks of winter. In a nod to the pandemic, Phil delivered his prediction to a smaller crowd than usual, just his Punxsutawney Groundhog club inner circle at an event that his fans were encouraged to join virtually. Phil emerged from his den at 0725 ET (1225 GMT). Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Vice President Tom Dunkel read out Phil's message, which acknowledged the sacrifice his fans were making in opting to stay home. "With all my fans viewing virtually, faithful followers being safe and secure, our tradition of Groundhog Day must endure. We have all passed through the darkness of night, but now see hope and morning's bright light. But now, when I turn to see, there's a perfect shadow cast of me, six more weeks of winter, there will be." In years past, Phil has typically emerged to roaring crowds who gather in the early hours of the morning to see him. The annual Groundhog Day event at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney has 'Punxsutawney Phil' declaring whether winter will last six more weeks or if spring will come early based on whether or not he sees his own shadow after appearing from his winter 'den'. This is the 135th groundhog weather prognostication, according to the club's president.
