Nature prevails over man': Seine floods Paris riverbanks Paris' beloved River Seine on Tuesday (February 2) flooded some of the city's riverbanks as waters have risen due to recent heavy rains. As of Tuesday afternoon, the river's water levels have reached 4.25 metres, compared to 2.92 metres last Friday (January 29), according to French rivers monitoring service Vigicrue. The "Zouave" statue at the Pont de l'Alma bridge - which derives its name from the French "Zouaves" military unit member it depicts - was submerged in the Seine up to its ankles on Tuesday, a well-known sign for Parisians that water levels are higher than usual. "It's not usual for this to happen in winter, it's usually in autumn," retired teacher Michelle Gloch said. Vigicrue forecast the rise to continue, with a height of 4.35 metres expected for Wednesday (February 3) afternoon. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has said last year that global temperatures will continue to warm over the next five years and may even temporarily rise to more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, which could heighten the world's water levels and cause fluctuations in weather patterns. Parisian Eli Kanaan said he was not surprised to see the Seine flooding. "We can't avoid this in 2021," he said. "It's a bit sad, but it's poetic, because nature is prevailing over man."
