“Thank you captain Tom” Londoners pay tribute to Moore Moore was one of the heroes of the U.K.'s fight against the coronavirus pandemic and died after contracting the virus aged 100. He had been admitted to nearby Bedford Hospital on Sunday (January 31) with breathing difficulties. Fellow residents of Marston Moretaine told Reuters they were greatly saddened by the loss of Moore, who raised close to 33 million pounds ($45 million) for the U.K.'s National Health Service (NHS) by by walking laps around his garden in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020. Moore's original aim was to raise 1,000 pounds ($1,272) by walking 100 laps with the aid of his walker. He also recorded a hit single, "You'll Never Walk Alone," that hit No. 1 on the U.K. charts. In the process, he broke two Guinness World Records -- for the oldest person to achieve a U.K. No. 1 track, displacing Tom Jones, and also for raising the most money on an individual charity walk. He was knighted by the Queen in a private ceremony at Windsor Castle. In a statement, Moore's daughters Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira said: "The last year of our father's life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he'd only ever dreamed of." (Production: Ben Makori, Will Russell, Ben Dangerfield)
