German start up Wingcopter joins race to offer COVID 19 vaccine distribution by air "What's special about Wingcopter is that it flies extremely fast: we set the world record with a maximum speed of 240 km/h (149 MPH). It can fly very far, more than 100 km (62 miles) with one battery charge." "The other thing, the main innovation is the swivel arm rotor which means (moves drone's arm) the drone takes off vertically from any spot. It requires no infrastructure. The drone can take off anywhere. We then swivel the drone's four rotors 90 degrees (moves drone's arm) and it then flies forward at a very high speed. Once it arrives at its destination it swivels back its rotors and remains stationary in the air. (gestures) It can then lower the parcels (gestures up and down) from up there in the air with the help of a winch before it is reloaded to fly back and forth to deliver with a high efficiency." "This (holds it up) is an aerodynamic delivery box attached below the drone which fits a special cooling box to hold the vaccines which require special handling. The box contains such cooling pads (shows them) and the vials. So this is what makes up the sacred delivery which needs to reach the client intact and at the right temperature. All this goes into the box and underneath the drone which allows it to make many flights a day. It can reach remote, difficult to access regions. We work a lot in developing countries where we deliver to villages which on foot or by car would take several hours to reach. I do believe that this drone will help to get vaccines to their destination more quickly during this pandemic and without damaging them." "We want to use the drone during the coronavirus crisis to deliver vaccines more quickly and safely to their destination while maintaining the cold chain. In summary, we can take off from one location and then send the drone to various final destinations." "Together with Unicef, we already delivered vaccines to various remote villages and shortened the waiting period from hours to minutes (gestures). At the time they were vaccines for children. The knowledge from then we can now apply to the COVID-19 vaccine delivery and we know exactly what to do in order to deliver these vaccines much more efficiently."
