@Canelo Alvarez: "I Don't Consider The Mayweather Loss As A Defeat; Golovkin Fight Is Bigger!"
“Most definitely, I was too young and it showed,” Alvarez said. “But there I can say that what won [the fight for Mayweather] was the experience."- Alvarez. http://www.boxingscene.com/canelo-considers-golovkin-fight-bigger-mayweather-fight--120447 Canelo Alvarez appreciates all that his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. has done for his career. The Mexican superstar made what was then a career-high $10 million guarantee for facing Mayweather. Boxing the polarizing pound-for-pound king also enabled Alvarez to become one of the sport’s only consistently productive pay-per-view attractions. Four years later, however, Alvarez considers his middleweight championship showdown with Gennady Golovkin to be the biggest fight of his nearly 12-year pro career. The former junior middleweight and middleweight champion will earn a career-high purse for challenging Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) on Saturday night and considers this a legacy-defining fight against a dangerous opponent skeptics criticized him for avoiding. Alvarez assessed the importance of the Mayweather and Golovkin fights while speaking to a group of reporters prior to a press conference Wednesday at MGM Grand. “The Floyd Mayweather fight was very big and it was a big event,” Alvarez said through a translator. “And at my [young] age at the time, it was one of the biggest and most important. But today, and I’ve been in other big events, I’ve been in other big fights – but this fight, yes, because of all the surroundings, all the back-and-forth and everything that was involved to make this fight, I think so. I think this is biggest fight at this moment. And it came at the right moment.” Against Floyd Mayweather, Canelo was so badly out of his league that he couldn’t get out of the way of anything that was being thrown at him. The speed from Mayweather’s shots was just too quick for the redheaded Mexican star. That was the last time Canelo fought a really good fighter. Golden Boy Promotions have been making the right moves when it comes to Canelo’s fights since the Mayweather fiasco. Mayweather is facing Conor Mcgregor August 26. Showtime commentator Steve Farhood took time time to chat up a number of boxing topics with On The Ropes Boxing Radio, and among other topics — you know, like Mayweather-McGregor — he also gave some of his thoughts on next month’s showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. "[Canelo has] knocked out Amir Kahn, who had even been knocked out at 135 pounds, [James] Kirkland, who's always hurt and was knocked out at 154 pounds and had not fought for two years [when he faces Canelo]. Who else has Canelo knocked out with a [true] knockout? Then others he beat because they got tired as was the case with Liam Smith." Despite being a total boxing amateur–the Mayweather fight will be his first professional bout–the MMA firebrand decided to not just pass judgment on Canelo and Golovkin (combined record: 86-1-1), but rather talk down on them: “I’m not too much of a fan of either of those. I think Canelo is a little bit stuck, a little bit flat on his feet. When I was watching footage of him, I just see him getting peppered. He has no feet under him,” said McGregor, before continuing on about GGG. “Golovkin came into camp for this preparation badly out of shape. I’m looking at him badly out of shape at Big Bear, and I just see drained individual. Although they’re supposed to be up there as well, I don’t believe they really are.” Regardless of what one might think about both Canelo’s pointed dodging of high-profile matches and of Golovkin’s supposedly depleting skills, both of those fighters would–pretty convincingly–be favored in a 1-on-1 match against McGregor, who goes into his bout with Mayweather as a historical underdog. That’s not to say that McGregor can’t or shouldn’t talk smack; he has a fight to promote, and boxing isn’t like other sports; competitors can choose their opponents to a heavy extent, so it’s unlikely McGregor would ever step into the ring with either Canelo or Golovkin. His comments, however, speak to the absurdity of promoting the Mayweather-McGregor fight as anything but a cash grab. The Irishman is playing his part perfectly, riling boxing purists up at every turn, not dissimilarly to how he pisses off MMA junkies with his brash style and luxe lifestyle. Just like a vast number of UFC fans want to see McGregor sonned in the octagon–like he was against Nate Diaz in 2016–there will be a vocal contingent of boxing fans that will root for Mayweather–not a beloved boxer at any rate–to knock him into the next day. You can probably add Canelo, Golovkin, and De La Hoya to that list now, although they should thank McGregor for one thing: at least people are talking about their fight now.
