@A RARE SIGHT: New Zealand's flightless nocturnal kiwi bird in daylight
Video copyright Sharon Barnes. www.sharonbarnes.co.nz Did you know that most New Zealanders (we call ourselves Kiwis) never get to see our iconic flightless kiwi bird in the wild? The kiwi is the only bird in the world with nostrils at the tip of its long beak. This is the southern brown kiwi or tokoeka. It eats mostly small invertebrates, earthworms and larvae of beetles, cicadas and moths, spiders, crickets weta, berries and fallen fruit. This video was taken (with a telephoto lens) on Stewart Island just after daybreak, we watched it quietly and didn't move for 45 minutes until it wandered off, it wasn’t aware of our presence.
