I had recently found a really nice vintage upright piano for the church I was working at and had gathered a group of guys to help me move it. When we put it on the stage it was a whole step flat. I started (trying) to tune it, struggling to get a small range of keys to pitch. I remember later sitting on that pitch-black stage. I was limping through my first ministry position and in that context, I wrote this song. Within the constraints of the instrument, using only two octaves of poorly tuned notes, this song was born. He's'nt Silent is DENSE with meaning. It describes multiple perspectives and positions simultaneously. It is both comforting and incredibly heartbreaking. I see the meaning of this song evolving as the listener grows and changes. As I grow and change. One final interesting detail.
