Viewpoint Virtual Happy Hour: Reflections on the 2010 West Memphis Shooting with Sheriff Mike Neal It was May 20, 2010 in West Memphis, Arkansas when then Wildlife Officer Michael K. Neal made the critical decision to put his state truck between the suspects’ van and police sedans in the middle of a lethal shootout. Officer Neal was instrumental in ending the brutal gun battle in West Memphis that resulted in the death of two West Memphis police officers and the wounding of the Crittenden County Sheriff and his chief deputy. Sheriff Neal has received numerous awards from the May 20th shooting which included: 3 Medals of Valor, the 2011 International officer of the year. On February 20, 2012 Officer Neal was awarded the Congressional Medal of Valor from the President of the United States. Sheriff Neal’s truck is now on display at the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington DC.
