6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Pakistan | Nature Lover's Paradise [4K] Ultra HD World Heritage site, any of various areas or objects that are inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List. The sites are designated as having “outstanding universal value” under the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. This document was adopted by UNESCO in 1972 and formally took effect in 1975 after having been ratified by 20 countries. It provides a framework for international cooperation in preserving and protecting cultural treasures and natural areas throughout the world. As of July 2021, a total of 1,154 World Heritage Sites (897 cultural, 218 natural, and 39 mixed properties) exist across 167 countries. Pakistan ratified the convention on 23.07.1976, making its historical sites eligible for inclusion on the list. Since then, UNESCO has designated six sites in Pakistan as World Heritage Sites and twenty-six sites are on the tentative list. UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pakistan: Intro: Dharmarajika Stupa - Taxila (0:00) • Taxila - 1980 (0:16) • Takhit-i-Bahi 1980 (0:57) • Lahore Fort & Shalamar Gardens - 1981 (1:21) • Makli Necropolis - 1981 (1:54) • Mohenjo-Daro - 1980 (2:27) • Rohtas Fort - 1977 (3:00) There are three types of sites listed on UNESCO World Heritage list, i.e: cultural (include hundreds of historic buildings and town sites, important archaeological sites, and works of monumental sculpture or painting), natural (refers to natural features, geological and physiographical formations and delineated areas that constitute the habitat of threatened species of animals and plants and natural sites of value from the point of view of science, conservation or natural beauty), and mixed sites (containing both natural and cultural significance). • Pakistan's all six sites falls in the category of cultural heritage sites.
