Bharatanatyam dance video exploring the dual energies of LĀSYA and TĀṆḌAVA through the Pañca-mahā-bhūta - the five great elements of nature, which are also an integral part of us. By understanding them, I seek to understand the human self. I have conceptualized this in 3 different ways, which make up the 3 segments in this video. 1. The first segment is an exploration of these dual energies in water as it flows gracefully or more forcefully- two energies encapsulated inside one form. This is also very personal as I see my soul as the water- sometimes my actions labeled feminine and sometimes condemned as masculine. Regardless I am the same, donning different garbs at different times, ebbing and flowing, gushing and roaring, maneuvering my way, just like the water! 2. In the second segment, I have explored the expression of the dual energies in love! I have imagined the earth and the sky to be lovers expressing their love with gay abandon. The sky in a Tāṇḍava way - reaching out to the earth with the warmth of the sun and cooling rays of the moon. The earth reciprocating in a Lāsya way- enrobing herself with that loving warmth as her heart overflows like the sea in the presence of the moon. As the earth reaches out through her tall mountains filled with the treasures of nature, the sky presents its heart in the form of a rainbow to hold the earth in an embrace that represents the myriad shades of love- Indeed a sight to behold!! 3. In the third segment, I have tried exploring the reason for the imbalance in the manifestation of these energies. Wind and fire in their Lāsya forms are essential for survival of everything but when these exhibit more of their Tāṇḍava forms, who is to blame but insatiable human greed! The gentle breeze that spreads the fragrance from the flowers and helps birds kiss the skies, is the same one that has the destructive power to uproot everything, forests and mountains, big and small, in its way. The fire that takes away darkness and brings us light, warmth and hope, is the same that can burn everything to ground without a trace. Even as they possess these dual qualities in equal measure, isn’t it human apathy and recklessness that make them exhibit themselves in one way more than the other? It was my pleasure to explore this concept with the brilliant musical team!!!
