@Tajik opposition leader shot dead shot dead in Turkey
A Tajik opposition leader has been shot dead by an unknown attacker in the Turkish city of Istanbul, opposition sources have told the BBC. Umarali Kuvatov, who had been living in exile in Turkey, was killed by a single shot to the head late on Thursday. His Group 24 movement, which opposes the government of President Emomali Rakhmon, was banned in October. Tajikistan had accused Mr Kuvatov of various crimes and asked for him to be extradited, but Turkey had refused. The Turkish authorities arrested him in December for an alleged visa fraud, but he was freed shortly after, Turkish media reported. His killing comes two days after a Tajik court sentenced another member of Group 24 to 17 years in prison for attempting to seize power and insulting the president. Dead at the scene Anti-terrorism police said they are investigating his murder. Media reports said he had been eating dinner at a house in the area with his family. Police say that he was dead before they arrived at the scene. Mr Kuvatov is reported to have worked closely with President Rakhmon's son-in-law from 2001 to 2012, when they supplied fuel to Nato forces in Afghanistan. But the pair are believed to have fallen out, forcing Mr Kuvatov into opposition and then out of the country.
