New Canaan Library is delighted to invite author Amy Bloom to discuss her heart-rendering memoir In Love: A Memoir in Love and Loss. Bloom began to notice changes in her husband, Brian….. it seemed there was a glass wall between them, and their long walks and talks stopped. Their world was altered forever when an MRI confirmed what they could no longer ignore: Brian had Alzheimer’s disease. Forced to confront the truth of the diagnosis and its impact on the future he had envisioned, Brian was determined to die on his feet, not live on his knees. Supporting each other in their last journey together, Brian and Amy made the unimaginably difficult and painful decision to go to Dignitas, an organization based in Switzerland that empowers a person to end their own life with dignity and peace. In this heartbreaking and surprising memoir, Bloom sheds light on a part of life we so often shy away from discussing—its ending. Facilitating this talk will be Rachel L. Diehl. Amy Bloom is the author of four novels: White Houses, Lucky Us, Away, and Love Invents Us; and three collections of short stories: Where the God Of Love Hangs Out, Come to Me (finalist for the National Book Award), and A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You (finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award). Her first book of nonfiction, Normal: Transsexual CEOs, Crossdressing Cops and Hermaphrodites with Attitudes, is a staple of university sociology and biology courses. Her most recent book is the widely acclaimed NY Times bestselling memoir, In Love. She has written for magazines such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Elle, The Atlantic Monthly, Slate, and Salon, and her work has been translated into fifteen languages. She is the Shapiro-Silverberg Professor of Creating Writing at Wesleyan University. Rachel L. Diehl was an Adjunct Professor for many years at Seton Hall University School of Law. Before that she was a Litigation Associate at McCarter & English, LLP in Newark, NJ. Rachel has been actively involved in many New Canaan charitable organizations, including the Fresh Air Fund, Horizons, the National Charity League, and the Norwalk Mentor Program. Rachel received a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from Ohio Wesleyan, a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law and an MSW from NYU. Rachel enjoys all genres but has a particular affinity for Joan Didion, Elizabeth Strout, and Mary Oliver.
