@Tories plot to oust 'calamity' Theresa May by June 30 as 76% say she must quit - News BL
Tory activists are drumming up a new plot to oust "calamity" Theresa May by June 30 over her handling of Brexit . Fresh reports have emerged that activists want to change party rules to force another leadership challenge against the flailing Prime Minister. Currently Mrs May has a year's grace after surviving a Tory leadership challenge in December 2018. But furious activists say she should face a contest again sooner after delaying Brexit to October 31 and opening softer deal talks with Labour . According to the Sunday Times, Sir Graham Brady - chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs - will meet the PM this week. He will tell her 70% of Tory MPs want her to resign, it is reported - and the Committee will discuss tearing up the current 'one year' rule this week. Many want her out by June 30 - which she claimed would be the latest possible date for Brexit. Beyond this point Britain will have to send new MEPs to the European Parliament. One previously loyal minister told the Sunday Times: "She has to go. She is a calamity". And leaked notes showed one local party boss saying: "We must do whatever it takes to get rid of her." If the one-year rule is torn up, it would take 47 Tory MPs' letters to trigger a new leadership challenge against Mrs May. She would then need to win the backing of 157 of her MPs or face a full-blown leadership contest, with a vote by the 100,000-odd Tory members. With Mrs May promising to stand down once her Brexit deal is passed, the Conservatives are already in a full-blown leadership contest in all but name. Jeremy Hunt, Amber Rudd, Boris Johnson, Sajid Javid and Dominic Raab are among senior figures upping their profile ahead of a party contest. Meanwhile support among grassroots Conservatives is collapsing. A damning Survation poll of 781 Tory councillors today found 76% want the Prime Minister to resign - with 43% saying she must go immediately. The same poll found just 52% of Conservative councillors plan to vote for their own party in the EU elections, with 40% set to back Nigel Farage's Brexit Party. One councillor questioned in the study said: "The Conservative Party is dead. It will take a strong leader to dredge it out of the mud."
