Moment Toddler Saved From Drowning In Swimming Pool In Brazil. A toddler was saved from drowning in a swimming pool by a security guard who happened to be inspecting the area at the time. The unsupervised three-year-old plunged into the main adult pool in a leisure area in a condominium in Brazil. He was underwater for nearly 20 seconds with only his flailing hands visible above his submerged body. Alex Sandro, a porter at the gated apartment block in Serra, in the south east state of Espirito Santos, was on his rounds on Saturday at 7.50pm when he caught sight of the distressed child. Security cameras showed the moment he flung open the door to the leisure area and ran to the poolside. Throwing himself to the ground he lent in and stretched deep into the water to grab hold of the child's arm. Hauling the little boy out of the deep end, Mr Sandro hugged the frightened child to himself and there was a palpable sense of relief. The patrolman said: 'It was a miracle that I was there at the time. I could have been somewhere else. 'I was doing my rounds when I approached the entrance to the large swimming pool and I suddenly saw the child under the water with his hands flapping about. 'I knew immediately that he was drowning but no one else in or near the pool had noticed his plight. 'I ran to the edge and took him out straight away. I was scared that he would be unconscious because I didn't know how long he had been under as I hadn't seen him enter. But when I pulled him out he was fully aware, very frightened and shaking all over. I held him close to me to comfort him and said a quiet prayer of thanks to God that I had saved his life.' The near fatal incident started with the child climbing over fencing which separates the swimming pool from a children's playground. The recordings which captured the entire incident, showed the toddler first entering the smaller shallow pool. After a few minutes of paddling on his own he climbed out and wandered over to the adult pool which is about five feet deep. Sitting on the edge, he slipped himself into the water at the deep end, but immediately sank beneath the surface. Distressing images show the small boy totally immersed and floundering under the water as two people swimming nearby failed to notice his battle to stay afloat. Others in the poolside appear distracted and were also unaware of the lone child's desperate fight for survival. Mr Sandro, who has been working at the complex for two years, explained that the boy does not live in the private block but was visiting a family friend with his mother when the accident happened. He said: 'The boy's mother was breastfeeding her younger child in the friend's flat and unaware of the what was going on. 'An aunt was apparently watching over her son, who was in the children's playground, when he asked her for some water. While she went to fetch some, the boy climbed over the railings to the pool area, which are about a meter high, and it seems he entered unnoticed.' Manager of the condominium, Flavio Santos, said: 'The area patrolled by Alex is quite big so it was a miracle he happened to be in the vicinity at the right time. 'The pool also has a number of plants around it making it difficult to see into the recreation area from certain visual points. We have addressed these blind spots and now the cameras to the pool are constantly being monitored.' Parents have also been alerted to the near fatal outcome and warned to be more vigilant of not only their own children but other youngsters. Mr Santos said: 'We've stressed that it is imperative that no child should ever be left unattended for one second in the swimming pool area. 'Something like this has never happened before in the condominium and thanks to Alex we had a narrow escape on this occasion.' The little boy did not need medical attention and the family refused to comment.
