News Martin's video: The pitcher who could help Yankees Mets overcome trade fear

@The pitcher who could help Yankees, Mets overcome trade fear
June was defining in New York baseball.  The Yankees posted the best record in the AL, the Mets the worst in the NL. Thus, the teams opened their July schedules against each other with different priorities for this month.  The Yankees need to add a starter by the July 31 trade deadline; the Mets need to trade at least two, Jason Vargas and Zack Wheeler.  Could the teams help each other — be the Big Apple of each other’s eye? I doubt it. I don’t believe the Mets — namely their ownership — would sanction helping the Yankees win. The teams haven’t made a major league trade since 2004. They came close during the 2017 season, but ultimately the Mets redirected Jay Bruce and Neil Walker elsewhere.  Wheeler fits what the Yankees should be prioritizing — durability to help over the long season and high-end stuff that could be used to start a playoff game. Wheeler and durability used to be incompatible. But he worked a whole season last year, saving his best for the second half. And in an audition start Tuesday — and not just for the Yankees — Wheeler reached at least six innings for the 15th time, one behind the major league leaders, which includes the available Madison Bumgarner.  Wheeler held the Yankees to two runs over 6¹/₃ innings, striking out eight and reminding that even with a 4.42 ERA, the stuff is special. Wheeler, Justin Wilson, Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz unplugged the Yankees’ major league record homer streak at 31 games and — of all things — the Mets’ bullpen outdid that of their heralded crosstown rivals.  “My mind is right here, right now,” Wheeler said after the Mets’ 4-2 triumph. “I am trying to help this team win.”  It is the right mindset. And the Mets are hoping the Tuesday return from the injured list of Wilson, Jeurys Familia and Luis Avilan solidifies the woeful pen, triggering a surge back into contention. But the likelihood is June finished such dreams, and that a few wins now could elevate self-delusion and keep the team from doing what is necessary.  If they do sell, the Mets’ inclination is to move only their walk-year guys — Wheeler, Vargas and Todd Frazier — and not Diaz or Noah Syndergaard.  Wheeler would have the most value, and expect the Braves (who tried the hardest last July to land the righty), Brewers, Twins or someone not the Yankees to secure him. But the Mets must be open-minded to the Yankees, because all that should matter is maximizing a return — not who gets their players. Because the Mets must thicken their talent base.  The Mets’ March/April record the past two years is 32-23, followed by 23-33 in May and (close your eyes, Mets fans) 15-39 in June. Many reasons explain the steady decline. The Mets mainly blame the bullpen. Their 7.53 pen ERA this June was their worst for any month ever. The pen ERA was third worst in the majors last June, eighth worst in June 2017. see also Bauer? Wheeler? Where Yankees' pitching quest stands Now , where were we?
