Japanese mountaineer Junko Tabei became the first woman to scale Mt Everest on May 16, 1975. And here's what she said after scaling the world's highest mountain: “I can't understand why men make all this fuss about Everest — it's only a mountain.” She was being modest because her climb wasn’t that easy. An avalanche struck their camp at 6,300 metre and the climbing party was buried under snow. But 12 days after the avalanche, she summitted Everest with her sherpa guide. She also became the first woman to ascend the “Seven Summits”, having climbed the highest peak on every continent
