Currency notes are born, they die too - sometimes fading out gradually, sometimes the death is sudden. Demonetisation, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2016, was an example of sudden death of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. But currency is also reborn. So we had new Rs 2,000 notes and Rs 500 notes soon after. It’s now the turn of the new Re 1 note to born again with new colours. The old Re 1 note was discontinued in 1994 though the ones in circulation continue to be legal tender.
