Nickstermc's video: Tornado of Souls Solo - Megadeth Marty Friedman

Quick solo cover...... I promised something 'short and snappy' after the last upload, so, as counterpoint to the mellower stuff I've posted lately here's Marty Friedman's masterpiece.....the Tornado of Souls Solo. It's from Megadeth's early 90's album 'Rust in Peace'...probably their finest. I remember queuing outside Virgin Megastore to buy this (on vinyl!) the day it came out. I got heavily into Megadeth in my early teens after I bought So Far...So Good...So What? and Marty Friedman's playing on Rust in Peace blew me away. I'm not a shred fan really and the majority of that sort of stuff leaves me stone cold but there's something about Marty's playing that elevates him above the typical shredder. His playing is inventive, very melodic, exhilirating and doesn't just rely on speed to wow. His vibrato is insane and his technique totally unique. I won't claim to nail this solo, I reckon it's 90-95% there. The way he holds his pick and the way he lays into a note is so hard to replicate that it just wasn't worth the carpal tunnel syndrome in later years to push it any further for me. Marty's appeal for me is his uniqueness and he is a player that can totally claim to have his own sound. As soon as he plays a note.....you know it's him! The final section of this solo is where I struggled the most. I slowed it down in Logic and tried my best to work it out from ear. It's close but just not quite 100% accurate. This solo was a total slog to learn, painful at times. I enjoyed the challenge but if I never had to play it again I'd be ok with that!
