You sure must have heard about Gaganyaan. Here are ten things you need to know that will help you understand what ISRO's most prestigious mission is all about: 1. In his independence day address to the nation on 15th August, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised a manned mission to space by 2022. 2. Indian Space research Organisation has been making preparations for the human spaceflight program since 2004. 3. ISRO plans to send Indian astronauts to a height of 300-400 km in the Low Earth Orbit, and orbit around the planet for at least a week. 4. If India succeeds, it will become only the 4th country in the world, to have launched their own manned spacecraft after U.S.A, Russia and China. 5. The spacecraft Gaganyaan, is slated to be launched on the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV - III). 6. Tests on safety of the crew module, namely the ‘crew bailout test’ or ‘Pad Abort’ were conducted successfully on July 8, 2018. 7. ISRO is planning to build a third launch pad at Sriharkota to train astronauts to operate in zero-gravity environment. 8. Astronauts for this mission will be selected from 200 shortlisted Indian Air Force pilots. Only 4 out of 200 will be selected and trained. 9. The Indian human spaceflight programme is estimated to cost around Rs.10,000 crore. 10. The chairman of ISRO, K.Sivan estimated that the human space mission would generate about 15,000 jobs by the year 2022.
