Environmental protesters dyed the waters of Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain black on May 21, to call for an end to ‘government subsidies of fossil fuel.’ The demonstrators, who were affiliated with the group Last Generation, held signs reading ‘We won’t pay for fossil [fuels]’ and shouted ‘Our country is dying,’ per Reuters. The timing of the protesters’ actions is noteworthy: Italy’s northern Emilia-Romagna region was hit with catastrophic flooding this week that left several people dead and more than 36,000 displaced.
