‘The era of global boiling has arrived.’ UN Secretary-General António Guterres pointed out that July was the hottest month in modern history, calling for leaders to come together and improve the global financial system to incentivize green growth, as opposed to subsidizing fossil fuels and other industries that emit greenhouse gases. ‘We anticipate [we] will see the warmest year on record sometime in the next five years,’ said Chris Hewitt, head of international climate services at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). According to the WMO, the 8 warmest years on record were between 2015 and 2022. Hewitt explained that the world is seeing conditions for El Niño, a natural occurrence that already makes the world warmer every few years.
