NowThis Earth's video: Why the Biden Admin Approved the Willow Project

@Why the Biden Admin Approved the Willow Project
On March 25, during a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President Joe Biden said that despite approving the Willow Project, he had a ‘strong inclination’ to shut the project down. The Willow Project, developed by ConocoPhillips, will drill for oil in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The project has undergone much scrutiny; the Trump administration approved of 5 drilling pads in 2020, but it was halted by a federal judge in 2021 who said the environmental effect assessment was faulty. The Biden administration has now approved of 3 drilling pads, and environmental organizations have said they will continue attempting to halt the project in court. President Biden said, ‘The advice I got from counsel was that if that were the case, I may very well lose in court—and lose that case in court to the oil company—and then not be able to do what I really want to do beyond that. And that is conserve significant amounts of Alaskan sea and land forever.’ This was made with support from Climate Power. » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/knowthis_youtube » Subscribe to NowThis Earth: https://www.youtube.com/channel/nowthisearth Connect with NowThis Earth » Follow us on TikTok: https://go.nowth.is/Earth_TikTok » Follow us on Instagram: https://go.nowth.is/Earth_Instagram » Follow us on Snap: https://go.nowth.is/Earth_Snap » Follow us on Facebook: https://go.nowth.is/Earth_Facebook NowThis Earth is daily news coverage of climate, sustainability, biodiversity, species extinction, environmental justice, and other planetary concerns.
