Thankfully, however, the origin of Hellboy expanded beyond its unserious origins and became a stable of the horror, fantasy, and superhero genres. Throughout the history of Hellboy, Mike Mignola has been the driving force behind his most famous creation, and as the evolution of Hellboy took place with spinoffs like BPRD, it became clear that the comic pages couldn’t hold him for long. The first Hellboy movie, Hellboy 2004, had the perfect director in Guillermo del Toro, a lifelong horror fan whose favorite superhero was Hell Boy. Hellboy, explained as a half-demon spawn summoned during World War II in his Hellboy origin, was tailor made for Hellboy movies, and from the first Hellboy trailer, clip, and scene, we knew we were in for something different, especially once we heard who would be playing Hellboy: Ron Perlman. Hellboy and his demonic visage were an amazing match for Perlman’s mug, and throughout the first Hellboy movie and its sequel, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, the Hellboy evolution seemed complete. However, the Hellboy facts turned out differently, as del Toro was unable to return for his Hellboy sequel, Hellboy 3. Instead, we[ve been treated to a new Hellboy 2019 movie, a Hellboy reboot that replaces Ron Perlman with the scruffy star of Stranger Things, David Harbour. The new Hellboy remake is taking a beating from critics, and compared to the first Hellboy 2004 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, who could blame them? Still, the R-rating is promising, and while the movie may not be as iconic as the original Guillermo del Toro Hellboy, maybe the buckets of blood will make up for it.
