@Melanie Parry, as Miss Poppy appearing on Young Talent Time TV 1982
Melanie Parry appearing as a guest artist on Johnny Youngs YTT, in 1981/2 for her TV debut performance as a ventriloquist as a former children's entertainer and part of a well known children's entertainment duo (pre Wiggles). About Peeko & Poppy Peeko & Poppy were one of Australia's top children's entertainer's(pre Wiggles) appearing on TV, Channel Nine parties, Martin Place Christmas shows for the Mayor of Sydney and was one of the most popular children's touring acts, for the Westfield Chain working all over Australia. For on land performances and cruising for P&O on the famous Oriana they always had a following of children between 2 - 8 years of age. The Peeko and Poppy show always based its theme on good moral messages of not stealing and telling the truth and the moral that if you lied when caught, there would always be repercussions and consequences for not telling the truth. It was good old fashioned English pantomime stuff which all the shopping chains and venues that employed the show loved because of the moralistic theme it would convey during the show to the young audience. Parents also loved it because it gave them back up in their moral teaching for their children as well. Miss Poppy was the wonderful magic lollipop lady always carrying a bucket of wonderful flavoured lollipops and Peeko's character was basically the lovable but naughty and mischievous boy/clown character wanting a lollipop and going to any lengths to get a lollipop when Ms Poppy was not looking. He would often get turned into a giraffe or a large snail, or snake when he was found out to be stealing and telling fibs with his neck stretching up into the sky! They also had a special guest puppet called ''Mopsy who was a huge favourite with the children as he danced all over the stage and stretched himself swooping down into the crowd of children which made them squeal with delight! The children would always call out, "Look out behind you Ms Poppy" when they saw Peeko trying to sneak up behind her, or try to hook her lollipop bucket with the big hook on the end of his fishing line. There was always lots of fun and singing and laughter involved and the story ended with Peeko having learnt his lesson that all he ever had to do was to tell the truth and that he would get a lollipop by doing the right thing and earning it, without resorting to stealing. The Peeko & Poppy show ended in 1983 when both performers went to England to source new endeavours. Melanie Parry went on to become a celebrated singer studying opera in Wales and touring in the UK, Europe. Returning home to Australia in 1994 she has established her career since then touring nationally and internationally with her acclaimed one woman theatre shows she has produced herself with her Musical Director and Orchestra.
