The Evening Star was first composed as a setting of The Song of Eärendil from The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 2, Chapter I, Many Meetings, back in 1986. In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Song of Eärendil, the mariner must leave behind his wife, Queen Elwing, while he journeys to Valinor to seek the help of the Valar in defeating evil and ending the great war of the Silmarils. In this song we imagine Elwing's farewell to her husband. But it is the love of Elwing that ultimately brings Eärendil's success. Transformed into a sea-bird, she carries one of the Silmarils to him to light his way to Valinor.
