@The Mummy's Ghost (1944) - Movie Review
The Mummy's Ghost... man, they just can't leave that poor Kharis alone, can they. Why can't they just leave him alone? George Zucco is back as the ancient Egyptian high priest. I could have sworn his character died in another one of these Mummy films but, heck, he's back again as priest, and here he charges Yousef, the young priest character played by John Carradine, to bring ol' Kharis back again, using those tasty tana leaves (9 of them in the recipe). John Carradine does a fine job here. He's a this creepy thin, gaunt character who plays a convincing follower of the Egyptian faith. So they start brewing tea and, soon, the mummy is up and staggering along. Where did he come from? Dunno, but I thought he burned up in the last film. Lon Chaney Jr. is back again, and the makeup looks fantastic as usual. He staggers off and strangles old profesor Norman (played by Frank Reicher) Now the character Amina, played by actress Ramsay Ames, who to me resembled Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. So she is studying at a local college and is romantically involved with Tom, played by Robert Lowery. So Amina abruptly doesn't feel well, and soon she appears to swoon and fall under the Mummy's spell, and goes walking off through the night, in a trance, sees the mummy and passes out. When she comes to, she has an awesome Bride of Frankenstein stripe of white in her hair. So Yousef summons the mummy again, and the monster goes roaming about, killing an old guy or two (but no one can find him, even though he just slowly staggers along.) He meets up with Yousef and gets his tasty tana leaf tea. So the priest an the mummy head to a museum with Egyptian artifacts, and after they aren't able to find the remains of the princess Anaka, but when Kharis reaches for her, her remains vanish. So detectives show up and get the museum curator to read some Egyptian hieroglyphics on the tomb of Anaka, to try to get some clues of what to do. The devise a fiendish scheme to use the tana leaf tea to lure Kharis back because, you know, mummy's come running for the great taste of tana leaves. Now Tom and Amina, meanwhile, are planning to get married and head off to New York, but it will be the next day, because nothing can go wrong that night, of course. The detectives get to work brewing their tana leaf tea (9 leaves) and while Amina is sleeping, the mummy goes after her. He grabs her and brings her back to the Yousef, but, as you would guess, Yousef realizes that she's mighty pretty and maybe he has better chances with her. The mummy, of course, isn't having that, and then a conflict grows between the two of them. At this time too a big mob comes together in search of the mummy (all they needed was a few torches and some pitchforks!) But I gotta tell you, without dropping spoilers, this was an unexpectectly dark twist ending. I was expecting something a little more general and predictable and, well, you need to see this for yourself because I never saw this coming. This was a fun film and, although I'm partial to the Boris Karloff version this one was good, if only for that bizarre ending.
