Old Movie Watching with Rob's video: Silver on the Sage 1939 - Movie Review

Silver on the Sage (1939) was a fun Hopalong Cassidy film. The film opens up as two cowboys, George "Gabby" Hayes as Windy and Russell Hayden as Lucky, have just completed a cattle drive. But, wouldn't you know it, Windy is overpowered by some mysterious cowboys and soon all of the cattle are stolen by mysterious rustlers, and Windy and Lucky are blamed. Meanwhile, Hopalong Cassidy arrives (played by William Boyd of course) but this time, instead of just working with his two pals he decides to play the character Thompson, a cool as ice undercover professional gambler character who uses his disguise to try to get closer to the crime boss, played here by Stanley Ridges. Now I get the undercover routine, and I will admit to still being new to the Hopalong series, but in the film they do establish that Hopalong Cassidy was a well-known character and yet, no one seems to recognize him in town? Ah, who cares, it's a lot of fun. The cattle theft scheme we find out is being pulled off by a character named Ridges (played by Dave Talbot) who also happens to have a twin brother, so the alibi is that while people think he's in town playing cards, the twin can be off stealing cattle - the perfect alibi! Sneaky! I'll let you check out the rest, but this was enjoyable, and the film builds to a big shootout and some comic relief at the end. I'll say that I liked seeing Gabby Hayes and Russell Hayden have a little more screen time here, but it did feel like the potential romance with Ruth Rogers was cut a little bit short, which was a shame. These old Hopalong Cassidy films are a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to reviewing more of these, even if my three fans are hoping for me to get back into more William Holden films again. This was the twenty-third of sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy movies so, who knows, maybe I'll get through them all someday.
