Beginning in late 2010, the so-called 'Arab Spring' shook the Arab World. By the end of 2011, the unrest had spread to Syria, including its capital, Damascus. Syria's stretched security forces failed to crack down on the unrest, allowing it to morph into a full civil war in the first months of 2012.
