The government has taken this decision due to the continuous decline in the underground water level. In Haryana, on an average 2.20 meters of water level has gone down during the last nearly five years. There are many districts in Haryana where the ground water level has dropped by up to five meters. Due to the rapid decline in the underground water level in Haryana, the state government started the Jal Hi Jeevan Hai Mission last year and started a crop diversification pilot project for farmers in paddy-rich districts in the state. Under this, the target was to produce maize, arhar, gwar, sesame, summer moong, cotton, sesame etc. in 50 thousand hectares. The government claimed that 49 thousand 445 farmers of the state were included in this scheme. This year the government has increased the scope of the scheme to one lakh hectares. The districts of Karnal, Kaithal, Jind, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar and Sonipat etc. of Haryana are those where the yield of paddy is high. In many of these districts, farmers cultivate varieties that produce high yields in a short time, but there is a lot of water consumption. This year, the government has tightened its grip on the farmers who produce crops by leasing land from panchayats. The government has imposed a complete ban on planting of paddy by such farmers. In a letter issued by the Principal Secretary, Development and Panchayat Department of Haryana to the Deputy Commissioners of the above seven districts, DDPO and BDPO, it has been said that in eight blocks of the above seven districts of Haryana, land has been banned by taking land on lease. It will be the responsibility of the field officials to visit their respective areas and decide that the farmers do not produce paddy.
