Ov's video: Super Metroid 14 Ice in 49:10

This is an in-bounds low% run of Super Metroid that revolves primarily around the Gravity Suit and Ice Beam, known colloquially as "Low% Ice" or "14% Ice" (since currently, all the human-performed in-bounds low% runs collect 14% of items). It is my second personal best of this category that uses the PRKD boss order (Phantoon → Ridley → Kraid → Draygon) rather than the PKRD boss order. My first personal best using PRKD (and the first 00:36 of the category) was a 49:22. My final personal best using PKRD was a 49:42 (April 2018). PRKD saves a variable, but large, amount of time over PKRD for two reasons in particular: The largest and most obvious reason is because this route skips the post-LN pit-stop entirely. PKRD runs visit the refill room to the right of Bubble Mountain before heading to Maridia, whereas PRKD runs use Ridley's Energy Tank and Kraid's Lair enemies instead to facilitate this "refill". Although this room skip saves roughly 23 seconds, some of that time ends up being inevitably bled throughout the middle of the run due to having to handle a few spots more slowly and carefully, due primarily to a delayed Varia Suit and a delayed Energy Tank. It also can cause Botwoon to be slightly more difficult to handle. For me personally, I'd say that I end up ultimately saving around 14 seconds of that 23 seconds figure on any given run, and would say that it's very difficult to tap into more than 18 seconds of that proposed 23 seconds figure in RTA, simply because of the luck involved. You can never truly save the full amount of time that skipping that room "saves", but that's fine - so long as you save SOME time from doing so, then you've saved time over PKRD. The only concern beyond that is whether you're skilled and consistent enough to regularly survive the route. The next largest reason, in my experience, is Ridley. Because Ridley's Energy Tank is optimal for PRKD, it allows the player to fight more aggressively compared to PKRD, which has to try to maintain its health to some degree in order to survive escaping Lower Norfair after, since optimally, Ridley's Energy Tank is skipped in PKRD. This difference has led to me saving a significant amount of time on the fight, although it's difficult to put an exact number on it. So long as death does not occur, taking damage on Ridley is practically irrelevant (in this route) - all you really do by pulling off a damageless kill is manipulate more regular Missile drops. Very few players can fight Ridley in a manner that fully preserves their health without sacrificing some amount of time in the process. This was a pretty good run and has a fairly equal distribution of timeloss/mistakes per section. There's about 20 seconds of potential time that can be saved from the beginning up to Gravity Suit (Bomb Torizo, Phantoon patterns), from there to Ridley's death (Magdollites lol, pre-Ridley farm, Ridley), and from there to the statues (post-Botwoon farm, Draygon, awkward farming of a crab). My sum of bests reflects this fairly well at the moment - 48:16. The most noteworthy positive aspects of this run would be the unintentionally-damageless - but still quick - Ridley encounter, and not choking in Tourian.
