I played around with layer styles for hours and hours, but eventually I figured how things worked. In my view Photoshop layer styles are one of the most powerfull tool PS has to offer. One of the most challenging effects to get right was metal effects. So, I set out to figure out how to create a gold layer style. Photoshop layer styles have tons of options, so how do you combine them to get a realistic Photoshop gold layer style? The golden layer style combines different settings for bevel and emboss, inner shadow, inner glow, satin, color overlay, gradient overlay and drop shadow. Making a gold layer style requires that you know how gold interacts with light, what color gold is (diffuse and specular) and also you need to conside the texture of the object you make. In order to create a gold text effect with Photoshop you need to combine the Bevel and Emboss settings to make the gold text stand out in 3D. Then you need to figure out how to make a golden colour that is realistic. Once you know that you can configure the Bevel and Emboss to render the specular and diffuse colors of gold. Diffuse is the base color and specular is the color where the material shines. The Satin property of the gold layer style helps accentuate the reflection on the gold letters in our gold text effect. At the end I've also added a gold gradient map and a vignette, these steps are optional, but add to the realistic gold text effect. In this video Photoshop tutorial I'm going through the process of creating the Photoshop gold layer step by step. So, you will be able to follow the tutorial and get the exact settings I have used to get a similar result. In just a few steps you can create golden text and you can save the gold layer style that we will create as a preset gold layer style. The gold layer style can be applied on other texts and fonts to get a similar gold text effect. ► NOW YOU KNOW: This is how to make gold in Photoshop. ► PRO TIP : You can use this gold text layer style to create a gold logo in Photoshop, or a gold text banner, or write a message on Facebook using gold letters. ► PRO TIP : By changing just a few colors, you can transform the gold effect to other metal effects like silver, copper, chrome, etc. ► Having troubles with following the video?
