Trebisonda, in Turchia, viene ucciso al termine di una messa il sacerdote italiano Andrea Santoro. L’assassino è uno studente sedicenne, che dichiara di aver agito in nome di Allah, per vendicare le caricature di Maometto. Il 30 gennaio sono stati infatti pubblicati per la prima volta, su giornali danesi e norvegesi, disegni satirici su Maometto. Don Santoro era noto per il suo impegno nel promuovere il dialogo tra Cristianesimo e Islam.
