Paolo Russo's video: GOCCE di MUSICA 2020 EPISODE 03 Paolo Russo bandoneon piano composition arrangement

@GOCCE di MUSICA 2020 • EPISODE 03 • Paolo Russo, bandoneon, piano, composition, arrangement
(ENG) "GOCCE di MUSICA" (Music drops) • a column by Paolo Russo (from an idea of Raffaello Barbieri, director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Copenhagen - Denmark, from 2019) Hi! Welcome to this weekly column entitled "Music Drops", in which I will lead you through my musical universe, sharing with you some moments of my creative journey. In these first 12 episodes, in addition to the musical proposal, I will try to give you some brief basic indications and perhaps even reveal some small background story. EPISODE 03 • Bandoneon Concerto N. 1 The bandoneon is a fairly complete instrument: it can play melodies, like a violin, full chords like an organ, accompaniment, like a cello, or contrabass. Nevertheless, it is also well appreciated in combination with other instruments. Think of the great tradition of Argentine tango, which has seen the "fuelle" (as it is called in Buenos Aires) combine admirably in duo with the guitar, or accompanying the voice, or in trio with piano and contrabass, or – adding violin and guitar – in the “quinteto típico”, or wider combos, up to the symphony orchestra. The immense literature and discography produced by the great masters offers us significant ideas for research, study and inspiration. Of course, in manifesting your musical world, you must then try to put aside external influences, in order to allow your voice to emerge and your history to reveal itself, in a direct and authentic way. My first concerto for bandoneon and orchestra is in 3 movements and I composed it in a rather delicate period in terms of family affections. As often happens in such situations, music inevitably tends to reflect the intense and fluctuating feelings experienced during the time of the creative process. The first one is determined, martial, as if to want to arm yourself with courage and hope to face imminent adversities. The second one presents a more meditative, reflective character – in the form of a slow bolero – in an attempt of researching inner strength and calmness. The third and last movement (in 3/4), wants to express the overcoming of the difficulties and the celebration of the joy of living. Enjoy the video and the music and goodbye to the next episode!
