Parsha in 60 Seconds's video: History of the Mezuzah in 60 Seconds

@History of the Mezuzah in 60 Seconds
Shalom and welcome to Jewish traditions in 60 seconds Today we will look at the Mezuzah. So you walk up to the door and on the frame you notice this little thing. What is that? That is a mezuzah and can be found on most Jewish homes throughout the world. They are made from all sorts of material and inside they contain a small parchment with hand written scriptures Deut. 6:4-9 and 11:13-21. In these passages God commanded the Jewish people to write God's word "...upon the doorposts of thy house and upon thy gates." The outer casing has inscribed the word "Shaddai" which means "Almighty" another way to refer to God. Others think the three Hebrew Letters are an acronym for Shomer Delasot Yisrael, which means "Guardian of the homes of Israel." There are strict rabbinic regulations for affixing the mezuzah. Rule all door of a Jewish house except the bathroom must have a mezuzah. Rule It must be nailed on diagonally. Not too high and not too low. Once the mezuzahs have been placed, a special prayer is sung during new home dedications. Some Jews kiss the mezuzah upon entering and leaving the house. A very small minority of ultra-Orthodox Jews treat the mezuzah like a magic charm that protects their home from danger. The Mezuzah is an important part of Judaism as it reminds us constantly of the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob.
