I. Allegro moderato (0:00) II. Lento tranquilllo (18:07) III. Allegro scherzando (30:48) IV. Lento – Allegro ma non troppo (44:26) George Lloyd belongs to those British composers who, in spite of the growing avant-gardist trends, decided to remain in a romantic vein in spite all odds. Considered as one of the fathers of British neo-romanticism, Lloyd lived a hectic life both as composer/conductor. His Fourth Symphony is his most personal work. It is actually a parallel to Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ Sixth and to Arnell’s Third, it is to say, a “child” from World War II; conflict in which, opposed to the former composers, Lloyd did war service and nearly gets killed: during one of his patrols in the Arctic, his ship was torpedoed and he nearly drowns thanks to an oil leak. He managed to survive, yet lost most of his friends and the shell shock left him in a terrible physical and psychologic state for two years. The symphony represents a recollection of these war memories of the Arctic, and while it speaks about the darkness and despair of human soul, it remains in a romantic, accessible language.
