Leonardo Velázquez is one of those Mexican composers, whose music has not abandoned the paths of the so-called musical romanticism, turning accessible most of his music for the mass public. One of his works are the Danzas del Fuego Nuevo (Dances for New Fire), composed for the ceremonies dedicated to the passing of the Olympic Torch through the ruins of Teotihuacan during the 1968’s Olympic Games in Mexico, the very first in Latin America. The New Fire (or Binding of the Years) ceremony was offered at the end of each Ancient Mexican’s century, which lasted about 52 years only. During each celebration, it was feared the sun would not come out again; a human sacrifice was then offered and the priests lit an enormous bonfire to renew the fire of the Sun. Velazquez took the ritual elements from these celebration, and mixed them with the festive Olympic spirit in a series of dances that use Latin-American styles such as samba, guaracha and huapango.
