@Andrzej Panufnik: Sinfonia Sacra (Symphony No. 3, 1963)
UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra, Mexico City conducted by / Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM, Ciudad de México dirigida por Zhouang Chen I. Three Visions / Tres visiones (0:00) II. Hymnus (10:30) Andrzej Panufnik belongs to the same generation as Witold Lutoslawski, yet unlike his youth friend, never went into extreme, radical styles, much in spite he fled to the Capitalist West where he lived with greater creative freedom. Panufnik lived in England for most of his life, returning briefly to his native Poland only when a liberal regime was established in 1990. His Sinfonia Sacra (or Third Symphony) is his most personal celebration for the Polish millennium, it is to say, the millennium of Poland as a Catholic-Christian nation. For this, Panufnik quotes the traditional Bogurodzica ( Hymn to Virgin Mary) which is the first Gregorian hymn ever recorded in Poland. He uses the melody as a folk song, a battle cry and as a final solemn anthem which prays for the eventual and final liberation of the Poles from their enemies grasp.
