@Eduardo Mata: Sinfonía No.2 en Do mayor "Romántica" (1962)
Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Carlos Chávez dirigida por / Carlos Chávez Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Guillermo Salvador. I. Allegro moderato (0:00) II. Lento cantabile (11:09) III. Allegro molto (22:23) IV. Eduardo Mata’s conducting legacy still stands up as the foremost Mexican conductor notwithstanding his death 20 years ago. Nonetheless, not many people know he was also a composer. One of his most interesting pieces is his Second Symphony “Romantic” which is evidently written in a 19th Century language, mainly inspired by Johannes Brahms’ music. The work represents a gigantic homage to European Romanticism which is considered by many the Golden Age for symphonies. Nonetheless and even though it belongs to Mata’s student years, this piece proposes us at the same time that in spite of the radical changes of musical philosophy and ideology during the last century, the romantic spirit in music is indefatigable, non-transitional, immortal… Imagen / image: La colegiata de Guadalupe. / The church of Guadalupe.
