Please join us. Composer: Osvaldo Fresedo EL ONCE AND EL GRAN BAILE DEL INTERNADO In 1914, Buenos Aires saw the inaugural and highly prestigious medical interns’ ball, El Gran Baile del Internado. Despite ghoulish pranks played by ball-goers, top-line tango orchestras and composers were drafted in to ensure that the inaugural and subsequent balls were A-class events. Francisco Canaro presented his new tango “El Matasano” Killer of the Healthy (a joke at the doctors’ expense), and Roberto Firpo dedicated “El Apronte” to the Hospital San Roque. The following year, Canaro followed with a tango that was to become a classic “El Internado”. For the eleventh and final ball, Osvaldo Fresedo wrote another classic, “El Once” (The Eleventh). Year after year, the ghoulish pranks became worse and a few days after the 1924 Baile del Internado, a hospital administrator, who had been a prank victim, shot and killed the perpetrator. The Gran Baile del Internado was cancelled forever, but not before it had given birth to some great and enduring tangos.
