Paul Pyro's video: Calcium Metal and Snow Reaction

FOLLOWING IS FOR THE HEARING IMPARED (FULL VIDEO SCRIPT STEP-BY-STEP) ________________________________________­_________________________________ Hey everyone, its Paul Pyro and today I have a quick experiment with the reaction between Calcium Metal and snow. To get started I placed a small chunck of calcium metal onto a snow bank to see what would happen. Due to the thick calcium oxide layer that had formed over the piece, it took a moment before anything would react. However once the reaction started, it acclerated rapidly and melted through 8 inches of snow and ice. This delayed reaction is due to several factors. One being the thick oxidation layer between the calcium and snow, and another being that the temperature is so cold for the reaction to take place. This first test melted itself through 8 inches of snow and was unrecoverable due to the complete reaction that the calcium undertook. Time for test two Since I lost sight of the calcium in the first reaction, I wanted to trap the second reaction within half an inch of snow and ice. Again, the calcium metal does take a moment to react since it is trying to break the passivation layer of calcium oxide. This second reaction was much more pronounced since the calcium had no where else to go. You can clearly see all of the hydrogen gas that is being released and the heat given off helps accelerate the reaction even further by melting more snow and ice.
