Qawali from Late B Mata Din of Kurukuru floating Island , Labasa, very well sang i was just a kid but i remember when this horrific accident happen, Thanks for the Audio credited by Prem Singh & Family, Most Horrific Accident in Fiji's history It was Sunday ,21st January, 1973 and an auspicious occasion as a close relative of several of the victims Usma Wati Singh was marrying Jagdish Prasad Thakur of Davuilevu in Nausori. The wedding ended well and after guests had their meals,a group of people mainly women and children left to throw flowers in the sea at Suva point.Little did they know that most of them will not be able to see their loved ones again. Singing and dancing on the beats of musical instruments when they reached a bend near Laqere bridge,their bus collided with another bus coming from the opposite direction.The bus was ripped off killing 16 people,mostly women and children. Mrs Singh's cousin Satendra Singh was in form 6 when the tragedy occurred said it was the worst accident at that time. One bystander at that time Muhammed Unas, told the newspaper then that he was at a party nearby when he heard a crash at around 5pm and saw the bus tore the other one and the seats smashed like firewood,the injured and the dead tumbling from the side of the bus. Muhammad Unas,a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade at that time rushed to the scene to help the injured. Blood was everywhere and I tried my best to give effective first aid and get them quickly to hospital by stopping passing cars,he told the news team."I tried to to get the children first .We had put dead bodies to one side",he said. As the injured were rushed to CWM hospital,off duty doctors and nurses were called in for the emergency, while others came voluntarily. Police told the media then that 11 people died instantly while others died later. On 23 Rd January, 1973 ,Fiji Times reported that the death toll from this accident has increased to 16 as relatives prepared for the funeral.
