@"The Singing Stroke" feat. Eli Camp playing Carcassi Op.60 No.3 - Carlevaro Technique Stroke No.5
This is an excerpt from a private guitar lesson with my very talented student Eli Camp. In this lesson, we explored the technique of the "singing stroke" aka Carlevaro's Stroke No.5. This right hand technique is primarily used to bring out clear melody notes in the context of arpeggios to avoid the overemphasized accents of rest strokes and reduce displacement of the fingers below the plane of the strings. There are few finer examples from the classical guitar repertoire to develop this technique than Carcassi's lovely study in A major, Op.60 No.3. Studying Abel Carlevaro's "Escuela De La Guitarra" in my 20's completely altered my approach to the guitar (and saved my posture!). This technique have proven to be one of most rewarding take-aways from analysis of the text for developing my artistry on the instrument. The "Singing Stroke" can be used on all types of guitars, nylon, steel, electric and can prove to be a fundamentally game-changing technique for the fingerstyle guitarist of any genre.
