Peter Hallett's video: EQUUS Southern Straits 2018 sailing race start beating upwind spinnaker all night light wind finish

Southern Straits is a long distance sailboat race across Straits of Georgia, between Vancouver and Vancouver Island starting Friday March 30 and ending Saturday March 31, 2018. Total distance of this course as the seagull flies is about 108 miles. I was first-time crew on the magnificent EQUUS, a 2015 Sun Odyssey 519 built by Jeanneau, which is both comfortable and well equipped for racing. Helping out on foredeck was exciting, joyful, and physical as 51 feet is a big boat, with big sails. Laura literally showed me the ropes (lines, sheets, guys, uphaul/topping lift, pole downhaul, pole vertical adjustment on the mast, tack line, spinnaker halyard, genoa / jib halyard, etc. Reaching strut, too, but didn't use much.) This boat is well equipped with lots of sails, which translates into lots of sail changes. Starting with the big (No. 1) genoa, and changing down to smaller sails upwind, and then various asymmetrical spinnakers running and reaching downwind. We had high wind, medium wind, light wind, and no wind depending on the hour. The moonlight chute run back to Vancouver was sublime. Thanks to Dean, Shelley, and the whole crew. Sailboat racing at its best!
