In America, African slaves, who were forbidden to speak to each other, used hymns, or “spirituals,” to communicate plans to escape to freedom. African slaves in the Caribbean developed calypso to express their daily struggles and to protest their treatment under British rule. Dmitri Shostakovich included hidden meanings of dissent in the music he composed during a period of great turmoil in Russia. One interpretation of “Zavarakatranemia,” is that Yannis Markopoulos, who was routinely subject to censorship during the rule of the Junta in Greece (1967-1974), urges his fellow citizens to rise up against the dictatorship with what appear to be nonsense lyrics but actually are a call to his listeners to revolt.
