Phil6219's video: Braunton at Bamfurlong - 17th December 2020

Southern Railway West Country Class 4-6-2 Pacific Steam Locomotive 34046 "Braunton" heads north along the West Coast Main Line through Bamfurlong on Thursday 17th December 2020. The steam loco was working Statesman Rail's "Pennine Moors Christmas Explorer" railtour on a circular route from Birmingham International. It would have a good run up the WCML before coming off a little further up then head through Blackburn, Copy Pit, Manchester and then head back to the Midlands. It was really good to see this locomotive, my first time seeing Braunton and my third "Spam Can" for sight overall. The "West Country" and "Battle of Britain" classes were of course from down south, we in the LMS region would have had the Princess Coronation, Princess Royal, Jubilee and Royal Scot classes storming up and down through here along with my favourites, the Black Fives trundling through on freight - while I am not a big steam guy, I would loved to have spent a day standing at my usual spot on the WCML watching the steam go by... Braunton named after a Devon village, given works number 21C146 was built at Brighton Works in November 1946, it spent time based at Exmouth Junction, Salisbury, Brighton and Bournemouth sheds. With the formation of British Railways the loco was numbered 34046 in 1949. In 1959 Braunton was rebuilt and would later that year haul the Royal Train, it was withdrawn in 1965 and sold for scrap at the Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry Island. After languishing in the scrap yard for 23 years the loco was moved to Brighton in 1988, in 1996 restoration began with the locomotive returning to steam in 2007 after 42 years.
