Red fort 'also known as Lal Qila' was built by 5th Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to serve as the palace fort for the capital of the Mughal Empire(Old Delhi). The historic monument was originally named "Qila-e-Mubarak"(Blessed Fort). Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the fort when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. The construction started in 1638, and took over 10 years to complete. From the days of Shah Jahan's reign, the Red Fort has witnessed many historical events. In 1739, Persian ruler Nadir Shah invaded the city of Delhi and looted many valuable jewels, artifacts and other precious stones of the Fort.
