Piero Sini's video: Masseto with Axel Heinz 034

@Masseto with Axel Heinz #034
VIDEO 034. MASSETO 2009 BARREL TASTING Bolgheri, a picturesque town in the Italian province of Livorno, is home to one of the best wineries in the country: Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. Bolgheri is more precisely a hamlet of the small town of Castagneto Carducci, located in the heart of the nature reserve Oasi di Bolgheri, which is bordered by beautiful sandy beaches, cypresses and dense pine forests. The vineyards of the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, founded in 1981, cover around 62 hectares. Marchese Lodovico Antinori founded the winery in 1981 by planting the first vines and opening a winery, which was put into operation in 1985. After the founding, it took only seven years until the winery was able to introduce the first vintage, which conquered the market in 1988. The flagship wine of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is the Merlot based MASSETO. Meanwhile, this wine has gained a veritable cult status and is often compared with Petrus from the Pomerol. In this video I´m talking with Axel Heinz, the chief winemaker of Ornellaia, and we´re tasting Masseto vintage 2009 from the barrel. What a pleasure. FEATURED WINE --- MASSETO Country: Italy Wine region: Tuscany Cru: Masseto Vintage: 2009 Classification: I.G.T. Toscana Variety: Merlot In comparison with the barrel tasting from 2011, this Masseto is more reductive. But that, what is recognizable indicates its great potential. Only a few wines can offer this partisan style of releasing in minute cycle a bunch of amazing aromas like ripe and dark plums, cherries, cassis and some irresistible shades of macchia á la rosemary and thyme. Eucalyptus and a fine-tuned roasting aroma. Soft and juicy on the palate with ripe fruit impressions. Extremely vibrant and balanced acidity with tight tannins. Explosive and peppered finish. Grande! Drink from 2022 through 2040+ (August 2013). 98 PS Masseto is a single vineyard (7 ha) wine and one of the most sought after Italian red wines. Dark purplered-hued colored and exhibits incredible aromas of dark fruit like plums, cassis, cherries, spices, and minerals. Explosive with a marvellous expression. Soft and juicy. The acidity is absolutely focused and vibrant. Full-bodied with Maserati-like tannins. Dense to the core and shows elegance and finesse. The finish is spectacular and extremely complex. Best from 2022 through 2040+ (October 2011). 98 PS Follow me!
