The Rion Antirion Bridge, also called Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, spans the Gulf of Corinth between the cities of Rion, Peloponnese, and Antirion, mainland Greece. It has been nicknamed Poseidon's bridge, and is with its 2883 meters the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. It dominates the panorama of the area with the 164 meters of height of the bearing pylons. The roadway crosses the Corinthian gulf at 60 meters above sea level. The bridge is located in a strategic position, at the intersection of two major motorway arteries. Thanks to the ports of Patras and Igoumenitsa (in the north-west), it facilitates communications between Greece and Italy. Its construction has reduced the time to go from one bank to the other to five minutes compared to the 45 employees with the ferry. It was opened to traffic on August 12, 2004. The official inauguration took place on August 8, celebrated with the passage of the Olympic flame over the bridge during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
